In the past, mole baits have been developed assuming moles are similar to rats and mice, when really they are insectivores. A mole’s main food source is earthworms and grubs. Though you may be able to control grubs in your lawn, earthworms are the filter for your soil and cannot be eliminated. The richer the soil, the better the lawn, the more abundance of earthworms. An adult mole can consume 80% of its body weight in earthworms each day. Moles are present year round and will follow their food source. As the weather turns colder the earthworm will travel deeper into the ground and the mole will follow. When the soil dries out in the summer months, they burrow deeper and push out the diggings as loose soil piles producing the classic molehills.

Moles can travel 15 -18 feet per hour in unexcavated ground and can travel 80 feet per minute in an existing run causing extensive damage to your lawn each day.
